Lexz + Spencer - Hawi, HI

Love on an island.

Lexz and Spencer were married on a small family alpaca farm in Hawi, Hawai‘i. It’s a meaningful place to Lexz as she is from Hawai‘i, with family ties stretching back multiple generations.

The ceremony was held under a grove of palm trees planted by Lexz’s father to symbolize each of his daughters. It was a warm day, a little breezy, and cutting through the haze you could see the ocean in the background. It was exactly where Lexz and Spencer wanted to be.

I photographed the day using a mix of Polaroids, 35mm film, and digital. A few moments stand out to me in particular:

  • The Recessional Kiss
I captured this on Polaroid as they walked down the aisle, surrounded by family. I managed to move into position, quickly focus the SX-70, and catch the kiss.

  • Golden Hour Portraits
After the ceremony, we had already taken portraits and were heading toward the reception when the sun broke through the clouds. The light was perfect. Lexz had already bustled her dress and was ready to relax, but we paused for 10 quick frames. I love the way the backlight glows on them.

  • The Dance Floor
Lexz was initially unsure about having a dance floor, but eventually decided to go for it — and I’m so glad she did. Everyone let loose and had so much fun. The images from this part of the night are full of laughter, movement, and connection.

One of the things I loved most about photographing this day was watching how Spencer changed when Lexz was around. He’s naturally quiet and thoughtful, but as soon as she stepped into frame, he lit up. And Lexz’s joy was constant, from start to finish. Nothing but good vibes.
